Why does mentorship matter? It's not enough to simply hand people money to help them overcome their circumstances. Poverty doesn't just have its material disadvantages; it has its emotional and psychological disadvantages as well. At the Gaffrey Foundation for Education, we do not want to simply fund education. We want to invest in people either by providing them mentorship services through our volunteers or paying for a life coach or mentor to walk with them. We call this identity education, which is sometimes more important than only intellectual education.
Imagine a poor village where the harvest has just come in. People who didn't have money, suddenly do. Oddly enough the instinct most people have is to celebrate with what they have until they have spent their riches. This perpetuates a cycle of abundance when there is money and lack when the money runs out. It's not so much a matter of educating people about saving money when it comes in. One has to help those in need break free of the identity that comes along with poverty and beging to think in completely different ways about themselves and their resources. This is what we hope to do.
Sometimes people need a helping hand. At The Gaffrey Foundation for Education, our motto is: "We can't change the world, but we can help people who can." We recognize that the simple value of having received help typically generates in others a desire to give back to other people in need, kind of like that movie "Pay It Forward."
We don't despise the little things and the small ripples we make in helping people, one person at a time. This is why we aim to help those with the academic criteria but not enough economic and emotional resources to be educated so as to go and make a difference in the world.
Whether it is providing the poor in other countries with full scholarships or helping the poor in the US with focusing on school through partial scholarships, we are looking to give others the chance that we got because others gave to us.
Help us change the world.
